What Is Dysport®?
Dysport® is an injectable neuromodulator made with abobotulinumtoxinA, a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. It temporarily reduces the nerve signals that cause selected facial muscles to contract.
Repeated movements such as frowning, squinting, and raising the eyebrows can gradually crease the skin. By relaxing the muscles responsible for these expressions, Dysport® allows the overlying skin to appear smoother.
Its FDA-approved cosmetic use is the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows in adults younger than 65 years old. Dr. Heistein may also discuss other treatment areas when clinically appropriate.
What Areas Can Dysport® Treat?
Dysport® is most commonly used for vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, sometimes called “11 lines.” Depending on your facial anatomy and goals, a neuromodulator treatment plan may also address:
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
- Bunny lines across the nose
- Fine lines around the mouth
- Chin dimpling caused by muscle movement
- Vertical neck bands
Not every wrinkle is caused by muscle activity. Lines related to volume loss, loose skin, or sun damage may respond better to another treatment. Dr. Heistein can review our available
facial procedures in Fort Worth and Southlake and recommend an appropriate option.
Who Is a Candidate for Dysport®?
Dysport® may be suitable for adults who want to reduce expression lines without surgery or a lengthy recovery. Candidates should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and understand that the results are temporary.
During your consultation, Dr. Heistein will review your medical history, medications, allergies, previous injectable treatments, and cosmetic goals. Tell him if you have a neuromuscular condition, facial weakness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a history of reactions to botulinum toxin products.
Dysport® should not be injected into an area with an active infection. It is also not appropriate for patients with a known allergy to botulinum toxin products, any of the product’s ingredients, or cow’s milk protein. Patients who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding should discuss this during their consultation.
What to Expect During Treatment
Your appointment begins with a facial assessment. Dr. Heistein will evaluate how your muscles move when you frown, raise your eyebrows, squint, and relax your face.
After identifying the muscles responsible for the lines you want to address, he will cleanse the skin and inject small amounts of Dysport® using a fine needle. The number of injections and amount of product used depend on the treatment area, muscle strength, and desired level of correction.
Most appointments take about 10 to 20 minutes. Patients usually describe the injections as brief pinches or mild stinging sensations.
