Breast Reduction Information and FAQs as provided by board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Heistein

Breast reduction is one of the most common procedures performed by Dr. Jonathan Heistein. If you need smaller breasts, Dr. Heistein can perform your breast reduction in Fort Worth.

For most, breast reduction surgery is aimed at reducing the volume of the breast to alleviate such ailments as neck and back pain, shoulder pain and rashes beneath the breasts. For others, it is a way to better fit into their clothes and improve self confidence. Either way, reduction patients are some of the most satisfied patients in plastic surgery.

As with the breast lift, a breast reduction may use either a lolly-pop incision or, more commonly, an anchor incision. Occasionally, breast reduction may be performed with liposuction alone. Recovery is about 2 weeks.

Breast Reduction Considerations

During your Breast Reduction consultation with Jonathan Heistein, M.D., he will answer questions you may have about the procedure or treatment and will discuss any safety concerns related to the surgery.

Ideal Candidates for a Breast Reduction

Patients experiencing health and lifestyle issues due to their breast size are the best candidates for a breast reduction. Patients must be in good overall health for this procedure, since poor health can increase the likelihood of complications during surgery.

Patients who smoke must quit prior to the procedure date and must avoid smoking during recovery. If the patient is still breastfeeding, they can discuss their options when they come in for a consultation. Patients should maintain realistic expectations in terms of results.

The Consultation

Before patients can get a breast reduction, they will need to schedule a consultation to get more information about the procedure. Their breasts will be examined, and details about their medical history will be discussed.

The surgeon will go over the steps involved in breast reduction surgery, from preparation to the healing process. Patients are encouraged to ask questions during the consultation. Once a surgical plan has been developed, the procedure date will be set.

What is Breast Reduction Like?

At the start of a breast reduction procedure, general anesthesia is administered. Once it has taken effect, incisions are created. Two incision options are available: the lolly-pop method and the anchor method.

The lolly-pop method works for moderate breast reduction. The surgeon makes an incision around the areola and a vertical incision down to the breast fold.

The anchor, or inverted-T, method is ideal for major breast reduction and can be used to remove a great deal of tissue. The surgeon makes an incision around the areola, a vertical incision down to the breast fold, and a curving incision running along the breast fold.

After the chosen incision pattern has been created, Dr. Heistein removes excess glandular breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast size and reshape the breasts. The surgeon closes the incisions with sutures.

In cases where only liposuction is required for breast reduction, a thin tube known as a cannula is inserted. Fat is then loosened and removed using medical suction.

After the procedure, drainage tubes may be placed. The breasts are wrapped with a special gauze for protection.

What is Recovery Like?

You may need a week or more of downtime during breast reduction recovery, depending on the details of your case. You should refrain from physical activities and heavy lifting for at least four weeks.

You might feel breast pain and fatigue. The doctor will prescribe an oral painkiller to help you during the first few days. Bruising and swelling will also be present for a time but will fade.

Make sure to go to your follow-up appointments, when Dr. Heistein will remove the stitches and bandages. He will check on the progress of healing and address any issues.

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost?

The cost of a breast reduction can depend on several factors, all of which can be discussed during the consultation. The specific techniques employed can affect the price, as can the total time needed to perform the surgery.

Real Patient Testimonials

Hello Dr. Heistein,
I am the mother of one of your patients, LM. I just wanted you to know what a difference you have made in her life. Just to refresh your memory, she had a breast reduction in May. She loves her new self! Soooo many times I have sat with her through complaints and tears until the day finally came that “she” was not scared and willing to have this done. At the age of 24, she is now able to wear those “cute clothes” she longed to wear. This surgery has reduced her neck, back and shoulder pain.
Thank you for your help, time and patience….and your staff as well.
