My teenage son has enlarged breasts. Does he need to be a certain age to have gynecomastia excision?

Once it has been determined by a pediatrician that there is no underlying medical cause for the condition, then a young man and his family may consider surgery. There is not necessarily a certain age, more a maturity level before undergoing surgery. Parents need to be sure that the child wants to have the surgery and not pushing surgery because of a perceived imperfection. Many young boys that are bothered by their appearance may refrain from taking their shirts off in public, avoid certain sports, or wear baggy clothes to hide their chest. Subtle signs like this may allow parents to begin a conversation about the condition and gauge his interest in seeing a doctor about correction.

In most patients the results of gynecomastia excision (male breast reduction) are permanent. However, significant weight gain and certain medical conditions can cause gynecomastia to return.
