Eyelid Surgery Considerations

During your Eyelid Surgery consultation with Jonathan Heistein, M.D., he will answer questions you may have about the procedure or treatment and will discuss any safety concerns related to the surgery.

Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is used to reduce the amount of excess tissue around the eyes that often results in a tired appearance. It can even soften eye creases, and sometimes lighten the dark circles under the eyes. Upper blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, removes excess skin from the upper lid and sometimes a small amount of fat. Lower blepharoplasty, also referred to as eye bag surgery, generally involves removal of skin as well as fat that may be producing bags under the eyes.

Occasionally, the fat alone may be removed, resulting in no visible scars. These procedures may either be done alone or in combination with other procedures such as brow lift or face lift.

Good Candidates for Eyelid Surgery

Patients who want to fix their sagging, drooping, or wrinkled eyelids would be good candidates for eyelid surgery. Patients would need to be in good overall health for the best results. Patients are also advised to have realistic expectations.

Patients will heal faster if they quit unhealthy habits like excessive smoking or drinking prior to the procedure. If patients are still healing from recent health issues or surgical procedures, it would also be recommended for them to wait until they are fully recovered.

Your Consultation

In order for patients to get the best results from their eyelid surgery and get back the youthful appearance that they want, they will need to schedule a consultation. This will help ensure that the patients are informed prior to the procedure date.

During the consultation, patients will be able to express their goals for the surgery. Questions regarding the patient’s medical history and medication intake will need to be answered. The patient’s eyelids will be examined, and photographs may be taken as a reference.

Patients are encouraged to ask their own questions about the procedure and bring up any concerns that they may have regarding it. These questions can touch on topics like how to prepare for it how or much it will cost.

Recovering from Blepharoplasty

Recovery from blepharoplasty generally takes around 1-2 weeks. Some swelling and bruising are to be expected following eyelid surgery. Any pain or discomfort can be managed with over the counter medication. The swelling will subside over the coming weeks.

Blepharoplasty Cost

Cost will depend on the type of eyelid surgery performed as well as other factors. If you have any questions about price and payment options, Dr. Heistein can address them along with any other questions or concerns during your consultation.

Eyelid Surgery FAQ

  • I am bothered by the sagging skin around my face and eyes. How do I know if I should have a brow lift, facelift, or eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty is intended to reduce the amount of excess and sagging skin around the eyelids. Sagging skin around the eyes is associated with aging and can contribute to a tired appearance. Lower blepharoplasty can correct “bags” under the eyes.

Blepharoplasty does not correct facial wrinkles nor will it smooth wrinkles on the forehead or lift sagging eyebrows. Blepharoplasty will not remove “crow’s feet”, eliminate dark circles under the eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows .The best way to find out which procedure is right for you is to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Heistein, contact our office.

  • Do Other Procedures Achieve the Same Results as Eyelid Surgery?

No, eyelid surgery is the only treatment option to firm lower eyelids, remove excess skin from upper eyelids, and eliminate bags under the eyes. However, there are treatment options that can improve on the already excellent benefits of eyelid surgery. Our patients many times choose mild chemical peels to help further tighten lower eyelid skin. Botox® can help reduce wrinkles between the eyes, and fillers such as Restylane® and Juvederm® can help reduce fines lines.

  • What kind of scarring should I expect after blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery?

The goal is to keep visible scarring to a minimum. In some patients, fat alone may be removed, resulting in no visible scarring. In other patients, scarring is carefully hidden in the creases of the eyelids. However, no two patients are exactly alike. Dr. Heistein will discuss your planned surgery with you, during your private consultation.

  • When can I return to work following blepharoplasty?

The recovery time following blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery is usually about one to two weeks. Some patients are able to return to work sooner than this, others may require extra time away from work.

  • Is it safe to have blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery and another surgical procedure during the same visit?

In many cases blepharoplasty may be scheduled with other procedures depending on the length and difficulty of the planned procedures. It is especially common to combine eyelid surgery with other facial cosmetic procedures such as a browlift or facelift. Dr. Heistein will be happy to discuss this with you during your private consultation.

  • How should I choose a surgeon to perform my blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery?

It is important to choose a plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). In addition, top plastic surgeons will be members of American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). For more information on the importance of board certification for plastic surgeons, see our FAQ page.
