Implant Removal Considerations

During your Implant Removal consultation with Jonathan Heistein, M.D., he will answer questions you may have about the procedure or treatment and will discuss any safety concerns related to the surgery.

Reasons for Implant Removal

One indication for implant removal is implant rupture. When a saline implant ruptures the fluid is absorbed by the body, leaving only the deflated implant shell. This shell is removed during surgery and may be replaced with a new implant if desired. Silicone rupture can be harder to detect visually because many times the silicone remains within the scar tissue that surrounds the implant.

Implants can be removed if you desire a change in your implant size or no implants at all. Changes in the elasticity of our skin, weight changes, pregnancy, medical issues, and new phases of your life can all bring about a desire to make changes with your breasts and implants. In these cases, the implants can be removed or exchanged, and you have the option for lifting and reshaping of your breast.

If you have any changes to your implant or breast, Dr. Jonathan Heistein can discuss your treatment options.

Good Candidates for Implant Removal

Patients who want to have their implants safely removed for health and/or cosmetic reasons are good candidates for implant removal. Patients applying for this procedure must be in good overall health.

In order to avoid problems with healing during the recovery period, patients must quit smoking prior to the procedure date. This procedure is also best performed when patients are not pregnant (unless in the case of emergencies).

Your Consultation

When patients come in for a scheduled consultation, Dr. Heistein will explain more details about the procedure. He ask about the patient’s goals for the procedure, and he will examine the breasts to develop a better understanding of the issues.

Dr. Heistein will ask questions about the medical history of the patient. If the patient has questions or concerns about the procedure, this would be the best time to bring them up. This can include questions about implant replacement options.

What Is Breast Implant Removal Surgery Like?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Heistein will go over your treatment options and discuss any questions or concerns you may have.

Implant removal is a safe procedure performed under general anesthesia that can be performed in a surgery center or hospital. Whenever possible, Dr. Heistein will go back through the same incision/scar from your implant placement. When the implants are removed, there will be a loss of volume in your breast which could result in a loose, saggy appearance. There may also be irregularities, such as indentations. These issues can be addressed by additional procedures like a breast lift or fat transfer.

Recovering from Breast Implant Removal

It will be vital to follow Dr. Heistein’s post-surgical care directions as closely as possible during the entirety of the recovery process. This will minimize the chance of complications and help to avoid a prolonged recovery process.

During your recovery, you will need to wear a compression bra for additional support and comfort, and medication can be provided to help minimize any discomfort. Bruising and swelling will be present but will fade in time. Patients will need to take time off from work.

After four to five days, you should be able to return to light activity, although some soreness and discomfort may still be present. Strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting and activities that elevate your heart rate, may need to be avoided for up to six weeks in most cases.

Breast Implant Removal Cost

The cost of breast implant removal surgery will vary between patients based on the techniques used and the amount of work required to perform the procedure. Dr. Heistein can address any questions you may have regarding price and payment options during the consultation process.
