Botox® Cosmetic Considerations

During your Botox® Cosmetic consultation with Jonathan Heistein, M.D., he will answer questions you may have about the procedure or treatment and will discuss any safety concerns related to the surgery.

What Is Botox®?

Botox® is a cosmetic injectable that is used to smooth away wrinkles, fine lines, and mild folds caused by facial muscle movement. Its active ingredient is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A (onabotulinumtoxinA), which is a neuromodulator.

When injected into the facial muscles responsible for visible expression lines, Botox® prevents nerves from signaling the muscles to contract. This temporarily prevents the movements that cause the overlying skin to crease and wrinkle.

What Wrinkles Can Botox® Treat?

There are two basic types of wrinkles: dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles appear when facial muscles move, such as when you frown, squint, raise your brows, or smile.

Botox® is used in this situation to prevent the motion of the muscle and thereby prevent the development of the wrinkle. The most common dynamic wrinkles on the face are on the forehead, in between the eyebrows, at the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), and across the bridge of the nose (bunny lines).

Static wrinkles are visible whether the muscle is moving or not. Any dynamic wrinkle could eventually become a static wrinkle. Using Botox® on the muscle responsible for that wrinkle may allow the skin to smooth out over time.

Static wrinkles not caused by muscle movements, such as fine lines across the cheeks or deep nasolabial folds, are often treated with dermal fillers. For severe lines and creases, a facelift or brow lift may eventually be needed to restore a more youthful look.

During your consultation, Dr. Heistein will confirm whether a neuromodulator is the right option for the type of line you want to address.

Common Botox® Treatment Areas

Botox® is commonly used to treat:

  • Forehead wrinkles: Horizontal lines that appear when you raise your brows
  • Frown lines: Furrows between the eyebrows caused by repeated frowning or concentration
  • Crow’s feet: Fine lines around the outer corners of the eye
  • Bunny lines: Wrinkles that form across the bridge of the nose
  • Smoker’s lines: Vertical lines around the lips
  • Chin dimpling: An orange peel-like texture related to muscle movement
  • Neck banding: Vertical neck bands caused by overactive platysma muscles

What to Expect During Your Botox® Treatment

Your Botox® appointment at our Fort Worth or Southlake office will begin with a detailed consultation and facial assessment. Dr. Heistein will listen to your concerns, answer your questions, review important safety considerations, and evaluate the areas where repeated muscle movement may be causing wrinkles, fine lines, or facial creases.

After mapping out the ideal injection points for your needs, Dr. Heistein will inject precise amounts of Botox® into the targeted muscles using a fine needle. Most patients describe the injections as quick and mildly uncomfortable rather than painful.

With appointments usually taking just 15 to 30 minutes, Botox® is a convenient option for patients who want noticeable facial rejuvenation with minimal disruption to their day.

What to Expect After Botox® Injections

While Botox® is a low-downtime treatment, patients may experience mild tenderness, redness, swelling, or small pinpoint bruises around the injection sites. These effects are typically temporary and should fade on their own within 24 to 48 hours.

Dr. Heistein’s team will provide personalized aftercare guidance to support optimal results. In general, patients are advised to:

  • Refrain from rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours.
  • Avoid high-intensity exercise and exposure to excessive heat, including saunas and steam rooms, for 24 hours.
  • Postpone aggressive skincare treatments and products for 24 to 48 hours.

Botox® Results Timeline

Most patients start to see subtle changes within three to five days after Botox® injections. Lines begin to look softer, and treated areas start to appear smoother as the muscles gradually relax.

Final results can be expected within 10 to 14 days. Some wrinkles may need more than one session to achieve the desired level of smoothing./

  • What is the difference between Botox® and Dysport®?

Botox® and Dysport® are both injectable neuromodulators made with a purified form of botulinum toxin. • Who is a candidate for Botox®?

You may be a candidate for Botox® if you are bothered by lines that appear with facial expression and want a non-surgical option for a more youthful, rested appearance. Good candidates also understand that results are temporary and that treatment plans vary from person to person.

During your consultation, Dr. Heistein will review your concerns, facial movement, medical history, and previous injectable treatments. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to become pregnant, have certain neuromuscular conditions, have an active skin infection near the treatment area, or are allergic to any ingredients in Botox® should not undergo this treatment. Instead, Dr. Heistein will recommend alternative treatment options.
